How to Choose an Engagement Ring
Choosing an engagement ring is one of the most personal jewellery decisions you will make. It is not simply about selecting the largest diamond or the most decorative setting. A beautiful engagement ring is created through balance: the diamond, the metal, the profile, the setting style, and the way the finished piece feels on the hand all need to work together.
Start with the diamond. The Four Cs, cut, colour, clarity, and carat, are useful foundations, but they should never be viewed in isolation. Cut has the greatest influence on sparkle because it controls how light moves through the stone. A well cut diamond can appear brighter and more lively than a larger stone with weaker proportions. Colour and clarity then help refine the look. Some clients prefer the crispness of a colourless diamond, while others choose a near colourless grade that offers excellent beauty with better value.
Carat is often associated with size, but proportion matters just as much. Different diamond shapes carry weight differently. An oval, pear, or marquise diamond can appear larger across the finger than a round diamond of the same carat weight, while emerald and asscher cuts offer a more architectural, understated presence. The right shape should suit the wearer’s style as well as their hand.
The setting is equally important. A solitaire feels timeless and clean, a halo adds presence, a shoulder-set design introduces extra sparkle, and a trilogy ring carries symbolic meaning. Metal choice changes the mood too: platinum and white gold feel bright and classic, yellow gold brings warmth, and rose gold creates softness.
Before deciding, think about daily wear. Consider lifestyle, comfort, ring size, wedding band pairing, and long-term maintenance. At Decoris Diamonds, we guide clients through these details so the final ring feels considered, secure, and deeply personal, not just beautiful in a display case.
